Hitler in History (Tauber Institute for the Study of European Jewry, 3)
Published in Paperback by University Press of New England (August, 1989)
Average review score:

Excellent Place to BeginThis crisp, concise, precise book contains the core of what you need to know about the rise and fall of Hitler & Nazi Germany. In a mere 100 pages, Jackel gives the essential facts and offers well-reasoned, useful insights about such important questions as what sociological forces brought Hitler to power, what Hitler's long-term plans were, what Hitler's personal role in the Holocaust was and when he began formulating his plans for genocide, etc. etc.
Scrupulously researched, well-written and well-organized. Read it in conjunction with Jackel's classic "Hitler's World View: A Blueprint for Power" and with Lucy Dawidowicz's masterly analysis "The War Against the Jews".

Hixkaryana and Linguistic Typology (Summer Institute of Linguistics Publications in Linguistics, No 76)
Published in Paperback by Summer Inst of Linguistics (December, 1985)
Average review score:

An interesting book for lingaphiles and linguists. This book is an interesting study of the structure of Hixkaryana, one of the extremely rare OVS (object-verb-subject) languages. The author covers the inflectional and derivational morphologies of noun, verb, adverb and adjective forms; phenomena particular to discourse; and correlations and major differences between Hixkaryana and the typology of SVO, SOV and VSO languages, along with providing many examples of different types of clauses and compound sentences. The reader will benefit from either an understanding of, or access to, a book explaining some of the less often encountered symbols used in phonology.

Holding the Center: Memoirs of a Life in Higher Education
Published in Hardcover by MIT Press (11 June, 1999)
Average review score:

Some People Make It Look EasyI attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from September 1964 through June 1972; I worked at the MIT Lincoln Laboratories in the summers of 1968 and 1970. I was given this book by the MIT Alumni Association, and found it to be remarkable in its truthful rendition of events that I lived through, and things that came afterwards (going to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in the 1990s), and seeing that Howard Johnson guided MIT through the late 1960s and beyond and the Museum of Fine Arts into a rebirth, and made it all look so easy. I look forward to the video that should accompany this!

A House Divided: Slavery and Emancipation in Delaware, 1638-1865 (Carter G. Woodson Institute Series in Black Studies)
Published in Hardcover by University Press of Virginia (November, 1996)
Average review score:

THE source for information on Slavery in DelawarePatience Essah's book is a landmark work on a seldom-studied area of American history: the question of slavery in Delaware. While books on slavery in larger states abound, and books on slavery nation-wide are myriad, neither truly addresses this issue in the First State, Delaware. What makes the subject so important, and what Essah illustrates so well, is that slavery in Delaware is slavery at the margin. Just south of the Mason-Dixon line, Delaware seemed more often to be drawn to Philadelphia than Baltimore or Richmond. As a state torn between these two powerful poles of attraction, Delaware featured the liveliest debate over slavery of any state in the Union. The Quaker and Methodist influences coupled with soil depletion served to make the preservation of slavery in Delaware precarious, and the political climate surrounding the peculiar institution, galvanic. Essah adequately portrays the struggle for emancipation in Delaware and gets to the heart of the anti-slavery struggle. The only criticism one could make is that she does not address the organization and methods of the pro-slavery forces as well as she does for the anti-slavery groups. A closer look at that side of the issue would lend greater understanding to the epic struggle between the forces of slavery and freedom in Delaware. All in all, a good book, and the best one available on the subject.

Houston Architectural Guide: American Institute of Architects Houston
Published in Paperback by Herring Pr (April, 1990)
Average review score:

Excellent in every wayThis is a great guide. It is extremely thorough and well researched. AIA Guides tend to be hit and miss, but this one is definitely a hit. It spends just enough time on each section of the city. Houston has an interesting architectural history that this guide showcases with aplomb. I highly recommend this guide to anyone who has the slightest interest in architecture, it will not disappoint.
